About Institute

The Institute of Georgian, German and International Criminal Law was established in November 2015, at the University of Georgia. Not only are professors and lecturers involved in the Institute, but also bachelor, master, and doctoral students, as well as practicing attorneys.

The aim of the Institute is to promote the development of criminal law doctrines and practice. According to this, its work is not framed only by theoretical research, but also practical criminal law problems will be taken into consideration.

Contemporary Georgian criminal law can not be understood without international influence. German criminal law has been a strong influence for decades. Because of the strong German criminal law influence, comparative law research into this field will be very worthwhile in Georgia.

Recently, not only German criminal law but also other international factors have been increasingly important, including the International Criminal Court, the Council of Europe and EU standards. Without any assessment of their impact, it is impossible and meaningless to talk about development of the Georgian criminal justice system.

Based on the information discussed above, the Institute’s aim is to make in-depth research between Georgian, German and international criminal laws and to promote national legislation closer to international standards.
